The carcass of an 18-foot giant oarfish was discovered this Sunday by Catalina Island Marine Institute marine science instructor Jasmine Santana while snorkeling along the Southern California coast. Though the mysterious oarfish is normally found in the deep depths of the ocean, the creatures carcass was discovered under about 15 feet of water.

It took Jasmine about 15 minutes to swim the giant fish back to shore. It then took more than 15 people to carry the beast out of the water.

Little is known about the giant supine due to the great depths at which the fish normally lives. The fish can grow up to 50 feet long, but are rarely seen near the surface. The Catalina Island Marine Institute are calling this surprise finding the discovery of a lifetime.

We've never seen a fish this big. The last oarfish we saw was three feet long. - Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship
