2014 Grammy Tribute Spells Cory Monteith’s Name Wrong

Fans and friends still mourning Cory Monteith got another blow at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night (Jan. 26).

In a memoriam segment paying tribute to the stars who passed away in 2013, Cory’s last name was misspelled as “Montieth.” The late ‘Glee‘ star, who had battled addiction issues for years, died of an accidental overdose last July at the age of 31.

Someone was clearly asleep at the wheel in the event’s fact-checking department, as many viewers noted on Twitter. “Dear Recording Academy, it’s 2014 & no one has spell check?” one irate fan wrote. “His name is Cory MONTEITH!!! Fire the fact check clerk!”

Another broken-hearted fan tweeted that the mistake was “like a stab in the heart all over again.”

Cory’s shabby treatment at the Grammys was in stark contrast to the celebration of his life at last fall’s Emmy Awards, where he was one of just five actors singled out for a special commemoration. The decision to feature Monteith was criticized by some, forcing the producer of the Emmys to defend his decision to include the young star.

“We felt it needed to be represented, that at 31, he passed away under very tragic circumstances,” Ken Erlich stated in September. “And that it was important to be responsive to younger viewers, to whom Cory Monteith meant as much as perhaps these other four individuals meant to their own generations.”
