Elio Motors is about a year away from producing its three-wheeled vehicle at the former General Motors plant in Shreveport.

Any start-up, especially something of that nature, is very expensive. So we are excited that (Elio) stuck with it.

The company announced in January 2013 that it would manufacturer the commuter car in northwest Louisiana. Caddo Parish Commissioner Michael Thibodeaux says he's glad Paul Elio — the company's founder — is still committed to Louisiana.

"Any start-up, especially something of that nature, is very expensive," said Thibodeaux. "So we are excited that Paul stuck with it."

Paul Elio has told the Associated Press that 27,000 people have reserved the three-wheeled car that is said to get 84 miles to the gallon and will cost $6,800.

Elio plans to produce 250,000 cars a year at the Shreveport facility by 2016.
