Angelina Jolie revealed via the New York Times early Tuesday that she quietly made a brave decision to have a preventive double mastectomy after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene, which greatly increases a woman's chances of developing breast, and ovarian cancer.

Jolie details her reasoning for making the choice, as well as the procedures; explaining the reasons behind them, as well as the end result of her surgeries.

My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87% to under 5%. I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

She also took time to praise her partner, Brad Pitt, for being by her side with each operation. She also mentioned how having someone alongside during a process like this is a "very important part of the transition." She also encourages women to be proactive about their health, especially if they have a family history of breast, and or ovarian cancer.

Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, passed away at the age of 56 after fighting ovarian cancer for nearly a decade.
