Operators of a popular tourist attraction in New Orleans will be assessing damages this morning. Officials with the New Orleans Fire Department say that shortly before 7 PM yesterday several barges struck a wharf structure at  Mardi Gras World.

Tim McConnell with the New Orleans Fire Department told NOLA.com

a tug lost steering and ran several barges into the Mardi Gras World facility

The force of the collision knocked out some pilings that support the wharf causing a portion of it to collapse. Engineers were on the scene last night assessing the damage but the true scope of the damage won't be understood until later today.

There was no one in the building at the time of the incident and no one was reported injured. The crash happened very near where celebrations were being held for New Orleans new Mayor Latoya Cantrell. Inaugural festivities were not interrupted by the crash.
