A Baton Rouge Catholic High School has issued an apology to students and teachers after a racist essay from one of their students made its rounds on the internet.

The essay was assigned by a class at St. Michael the Archangel in Baton Rouge. The topic was Black History Month—but instead of writing about important people or events in African-American history, one caucasian student chose to voice her disgust for having to write such essay, adding that she doesn't believe "we are all equal."

Many concerned individuals brought the essay to the attention of WBRZ, sharing parts of the essay.

In addition to being ridiculed with grammatical errors, WBRZ said the student made claims based on questionable bible passages.

The student referenced what she thought were passages from the bible, supporting a claim that the only race on the earth during biblical times were Caucasians.

The school was aware of the essay and issued an apology, choosing to call the incident a "teachable moment."

The majority of those who commented on the story were in complete disagreement with the student's views.

As an alumnus of SMHS, I would like to say I do not condone what she did and am deeply outraged by what was said. However, I do not wish people to think that what was written (or the quality it was written in) is a reflection of the St. Michael community. In my four years at that school, nothing like this was ever tolerated.

Some pointed out the student's freedom of speech, even though they disagreed with her essay.

How did they get the paper? Who let it out? First I wonder how many rights were violated by the release of this paper.
Next I would like to say that it's a freedom to like who you want but somewhere This child was lead astray. And that is very sad.

Others simply couldn't get past the terrible grammar.

Are we gonna say anything about the atrocious grammar and writing in this "essay" for a 12th grader from a private school? Not only do the words they wrote down anger me, the horrible writing makes my head hurt.

I know SO many people who graduated from that school and they are some of the best people I know. This is a shame!

I truly hope this is one of those internet hoaxes, but it doesn't seem like that is the case given the apology issued by the school.

Also, I hope that the negative reaction to the essay by the general consensus might convince the student to open up her mind and change the way she thinks about the topic at hand.

What are your thoughts on her essay and the school's apology? Let us know in the comments.
