Baton Rouge police officer Michael Elsbury has resigned amid investigations surrounding racially charged text messages he reportedly sent to another person.

WBRZ Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto broke the story last week in an exclusive report that included the following strings of text messages.

Warning: These texts are NSFW and may be considered offensive to some.

They are nothing but a bunch of monkeys. The only reason they have this job is the n*****, n***** in them.

I wish someone would pull a Ferguson on them and take them out. I hate looking at those African monkeys at work...I enjoy arresting those thugs with their saggy pants.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said that Michael Elsbury was put on administrative leave last Wednesday evening and handed in his resignation early the following morning.

Chief Dabadie also commented on the incident to WBRZ,

the behavior will not be tolerated on the force, and said he was "sick to his stomach" after he read what the officer allegedly wrote.

Officer Elsbury had no prior disciplinary history as a 15-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

In addition to demanding his immediate termination once they learned about the text messages, the NAACP—along with Al Sharpton, has requested that the BRPD look into every one of Elsbury's arrests over the last 15 years to see if any may have been racially motivated.

Investigations are still ongoing.
