Officials arrested a Baton Rouge woman in connection with an Oct. 6 hit-and-run.

According to State Troopers, an abandoned 2017 Hyundai Sonata was found in a residential pond after it was determined to have "crossed several driveways" striking a port-o-potty and traveling nearly 500 feet before landing in the water.

Investigators determined that 30-year-old Megan Banai was the driver of the vehicle and her 8-year-old daughter was a passenger. Banai was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident but her daughter was not restrained.

Drug paraphernalia was found in the crashed vehicle.

According to The Advocate, the child complained that she was hurt after the accident but Banai did not take her daughter to the hospital. A family member eventually took the 8-year-old to the hospital where she tested positive for cocaine and a chemical commonly found in Xanax.

Police detained Banai on Friday and she was transported to the hospital due to her condition where she later tried to escape. Upon her release she was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on multiple charges.

hit and run driving, careless operation, operating a vehicle while license is suspended, no child passenger restraint, negligent injuring, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession with intent to distribution Schedule IV drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and simple escape

Banai was not an authorized user of the vehicle and will face more charges from the Denham Springs Police Department.
