As the voting result numbers began rolling in Tuesday night for the hotly contested 3rd congressional district race, it slowly became more and more apparent that a runoff between the two incumbent congressmen, Republican Charles Boustany, and Republican Jeff Landry would be the most likely outcome.

When all was said and done, Congressman Boustany received around 45% of the vote, and Congressman Landry roughly 30%.

The the night's biggest surprise was the over 20% of the overall vote taken by candidate Ron Richard. Richard, the race's only Democratic candidate, was able to command enough votes to force a runoff, despite spending substantially less campaign dollars than his two more well-known competitors.

Whether or not the contentious nature of the campaigns for the two congressmen will continue is yet to be seen.

The runoff is scheduled for December 8th.
