Outspoken St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Captain, Clay Higgins, has resigned from his post. Higgins, known by some as the "Cajun John Wayne" made the announcement at a press conference he called this morning on the steps of the St. Landry Parish Courthouse. The resignation comes after several groups, including the ACLU, publicly criticized a recent segment on KATC-TV that was focused on fugitive members of the 'gremlins' gang. The station said on its website that the particular video was not made on behalf of CrimeStoppers.

During the press conference, Higgins pointed to changing parameters of his job with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's office as a reason for today's announcement. He says he met with Sheriff Bobby Guidroz around 11am on Monday to tender his resignation and says they parted as friends.
