At the 2018 Oscars on Sunday night (March 4), Common graced the stage with singer Andra Day to perform the Best Original Song nomination, "Stand Up for Something" from the film Marshall.

While the song didn't win the award, it was Common's lyric about that NRA that had many people talking and eventually led to a response from the organization. "On Oscar night, this is the dream we tell/A land where Dreamers live and freedom dwells/Immigrants get the benefits/We put up monuments for the feminists/Tell the NRA they in God's way/And to the people of Parkland we say Ase/Sentiments of love for the people/From Africa, Haiti to Puerto Rico," Common rapped.

Following his performance, the NRA's NRA TV Twitter account tweeted a video at Common and The Academy about their commitment toward veterans. "@common @TheAcademy: This is what the #NRA and its members stand for. #Oscars," the tweet read.

Along with calling out the NRA during his rap, Common also took aim at President Donald Trump, claiming he trolls with hate. "New victory off of old faith/A President that trolls with hate/He don't control our fate because God is great/When they go low we stay in the heights/I stand for peace, love and women's rights," the Windy City rapper said.

Last night's performance at the Academy Awards was Common's second time gracing the stage. In 2015, the rapper along with John Legend performed their Oscar-winning song "Glory" from the movie "Selma."
