For those wondering when Moncus Park will be transformed into the crown jewel of the city as promised for a while now, we have an answer for you.

The former university horse farm will begin its transformation into an amazing park in early 2018. The project should be completed within a year and a half.

According to Elizabeth "EB" Brooks, executive director of Lafayette Central Park Inc., the first phase of Moncus Park should be under way in early 2018 with an expected opening in 2019.

Phase 1 will develop the front 60 acres of the 100-acre property. This is the area closest to Johnston Street.

Brooks says that the construction will be staggered so the entire park won't have to close all at one time.

Phase 1 of Moncus Park is expected to have the following:

  • Dog park
  • One-mile running/bike loop lined with live oak trees
  • Wetland pond and boardwalks overlooking it
  • Kayak launch
  • Tree houses for adults and children
  • Carousel
  • Mini-golf course

Entrance to the park will be free, but patrons will have to pay to ride the carousel and play mini-golf.
