‘Daily Show’ Features Louisiana Legislators Discussing Legalizing Chicken Boxing

In 2008, the Louisiana legislature passed a law banning the sport of ‘cockfighting’, the last state in the U.S. to pass such a law. That hasn’t stopped the discussion of poultry pugilism as Al Madrigal from ‘The Daily Show’ visits with Louisiana state senators Elbert Guillory and J.P. Morrell regarding the topic of chicken boxing.

Guillory (R. District 24) is leading the fight to make chicken boxing legal in Louisiana, stating that the fowl are treated quite well, receiving the best food, the best medical care and massages from trainers, while Morrell (D. District 3) opposes the idea altogether, saying chickens don’t have free will. Jon Stewart and the Daily Show originally broadcast the segment on June 18th, 2014 on Comedy Central. In true ‘Daily Show’ fashion, Madrigal takes a humorous look at the topic, making statements such as ‘…if it were up to people like J.P. Morrell, the chickens wouldn’t have ANY fun‘, ‘it’s two adult consensual chickens that are fighting on the behalf of bloodthirsty humans‘, and ‘you know the expression, smart as a chicken‘.

The segment wraps up with a re-enactment of the training regimen of Sylvester Stallone in ‘Rocky’, including the raw egg breakfast and famous run up the stairs (not in Philadelphia, unfortunately).

So, what do you think? Does adding ‘gloves’ make all the difference, like Elbert Guillory stated? Or, any way you look at it, it’s animal cruelty. Let us know in the poll below:
