The city of Baton Rouge is holding its breath on what a ruling by the Department of Justice might bring to their town. Last Summer Alton Sterling, an African-American male was killed during an altercation with police. That incident lead to protests throughout the city. Officials in Baton Rouge are preparing for more of the same depending upon the DOJ ruling.

The ruling in question is whether two Baton Rouge police officers will be charged with civil rights violations in the death of Sterling. There is speculation among community leaders that the ruling from DOJ could come as early as Tuesday.

It has been reported that members of the Baton Rouge NAACP have all but promised protests throughout the city should the officers not be charged with civil rights violations. While it is hoped that any protest, should there be any, would remain peaceful and respectful city officials have expressed concerned over "non-locals" traveling to the city with the intent of adding violence to the discussion.

I don’t believe the people that live here are going to be the problem. People who are coming in from Baltimore and Houston and Chicago, who are coming in to protest and to get their 15 minutes on Facebook Live, those are the people that are the problem.

That quote from former Baton Rouge City Councilman John Delgado was reported by the Louisiana Radio Network.

If you recall it was an outsider who just one week after the Sterling incident open fire on Baton Rouge officers killing three. There were three other officers wounded in that shooting.

Let us hope that calmer heads and hearts can prevail whatever the ruling from the Department of Justice might bring. Let us also hope that justice will be served according to the law of the land.  Until that ruling comes down it will simply be a matter of waiting while preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.
