It seems like white celebrities are having a "teachable moment" this week. First it was Bill Maher for saying the N-word on his show and now it’s Katy Perry for her past cultural appropriation in her videos. Apparently, the pop singer realized the error of her ways and apologized for her wrongdoing in a livestream interview with activist Deray Mckesson.

In the video above, Perry acknowledged her mistakes regarding cultural appropriation and promised to educate herself and be accountable for her actions. The “Bon Appétit" singer also said that she’s now a feminist.

While her kumbaya moment with Deray is commendable, several people on social media gave a side-eyed to the whole discussion. Other critics lambasted Deray for having a superficial interview with Katy about cultural appropriation.

"It seems like Katy was looking for sympathy. She found the right Black person, Deray, to hold her hand to 'educate her' on a 'tough' topic," tweeted one user. Another person delivered this snarky comment: "Deray talking to Katy Perry about cultural appropriation in a 72 hours [YouTube] branded livestream. Jesus didn't die for this."

Another person asked, "Who made Deray the gatekeeper of the black community?"
