Do you ever push the Close Door button on an elevator because you're in a hurry, or want to ride in it alone? I have a news flash. It doesn't do anything. That's right. It's the technological equivalent of a placebo, according to the New York Times. The Americans With Disabilities Act did away with them in 1990. Since elevators are required to be replaced every 25 years, there no working elevators in which that button still functions. So, why is it there? The answer is simple. It gives people a false sense of empowerment. By the way, I'll bet the thermostat in your office is hardwired. The one in the KTDY broadcast studio is, much to my chagrin.
