Drake May Have a New Album Ready for Another Record Deal

After Drake rapped on his new album Scorpion about completing the terms of his Young Money/Cash Money record deal, rumors have swirled about the "Nice for What" rapper's contract situation and future business plans. Wherever Drizzy takes his talents, he plans to drop a new album upon signing his next deal, according to Variety.

One "well-placed source" told the trade journal that whenever Drake inks a new recording contract, he'll have a new project to drop alongside the news. It's unclear whether The Boy is already working on a Scorpion follow-up, but the scenario would seem to give Drake some well-earned leverage over the final product, which could theoretically be completed without any label input.

Speculation over Drake's business moves spiked in response to a line on the Scorpion song "Is There More," on which he spits, "Soon as this album drop I’m out of the deal." The rapper has released five albums and three commercial mixtapes through Birdman's record label over the last decade, in the process becoming the most successful digital singles artist ever.

The stakes for Drizzy's next deal are high. Scorpion shattered multiple streaming records on its way to debuting this month atop the charts, which were also dominated during the album's release week by dozens of Drake singles, some that dropped years ago. He is perhaps the industry's most bankable star in the streaming era.

Whether this means he'll sign with another major label under more favorable terms, go independent or partner directly with streaming services remains to be seen. One source, at least, told Variety that Drake isn't expected to leave the Universal Music Group family.
