The Electric Zoo musical festival has been cancelled a day early following two deaths over the first two days.

The EDM mecca, which took place at Randalls Island in New York City over the Labor Day weekend, was shut down in a mutual decision by the festival organizers and New York City officials mere hours before the third day of the festival was due to start (Sept. 1).

“The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with city officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event,” the New York City mayor’s office said in a statement (via The New York Times).

The deceased were identified as Jeffrey Russ, 24, of Rochester, N.Y. and Olivia Rotondo, 20, of Providence, R.I.

The deaths, along with four other critical illnesses and injuries, are rumored to be attributed to use of the drug MDMA (also known as molly or ecstasy), but the official causes of death have yet to be determined.

The festival, promoted and organized by Made Event, tweeted about the cancellation:

Organizers also posted the following message about the event on their website:

“The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”

This year’s festival drew close to 100,000 EDM fans to Randalls Island Park and feature acts including Avicii, Krewella, David Guetta and more.

Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those lost in the festival. Here’s hoping in the future more patrons will party responsibly and safely.
