While the Broncos were getting embarrassed by the Seahawks in the Super Bowl on Sunday night, Facebook was in an outrage as a video that showed a juvenile (allegedly from Alexandria) violently smacking an innocent puppy in the face went viral.

UPDATE 2/3/14 (12:30 p.m. CST): According to KLAB, a 13-year-old juvenile from Alexandria has been charged with one count of cruelty to animals in connection to the video and the puppy has been removed by animal control and relocated to a safe shelter.

On February at 7:27 p.m., the Alexandria Police Department received several complaints that there was a video of a male abusing a small puppy circulating on social media. The report and the video indicated that the abuse occurred in the Alexandria area.

Before striking the dog, the boy is heard saying "smack cam" - a popular "game" played by many young adults, where they film themselves smacking others on Vine, and other social outlets. The dog lets out a huge shriek after being struck, then jumps down from a structure to escape any more abuse.

The video was posted to Facebook by the juvenile (who many allege to be the person smacking the dog) but was quickly deleted once backlash increased as the video began to go viral.

Many users sent the video to us and upon investigating, it had been shared over 1000 times before the link became inactive. By the time the video was deleted, other Facebook users had already recorded the video from a separate device, and soon those began to go viral as well.

According to comments on those videos, local authorities have been bombarded with people calling to report the video and allegedly there is now an official investigation looking into the incident.

We will keep you updated as we receive any official information.
