LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- Tropical Storm Andrea has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, marking the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

As of 5 p.m., Andrea is packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is located about 310 miles southwest of Tampa, Fla.

The current forecast from the hurricane center has Andrea tracking to the northwest toward the Florida Gulf coast.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for the west coast of Florida, from Boca Grande to the Ochlockonee River.
