The man convicted in the shooting death of former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith has been sentenced. Cardell Hayes fatally shot Smith on a New Orleans city street on April 9ith, 2016. He also wounded Smith's wife Racquel. The altercation came after a traffic crash. Smith was venerated as a hero in the Crescent City. He was a defensive captain on the Saints team that won Super Bowl XLIV, bringing New Orleans its first NFL championship. Head coach Sean Payton testified that Smith would have been on the Saints coaching staff had he not been killed. AP reports, Camille Buras sentenced Hayes to 25 years for killing Smith, and 15 years for wounding his wife. The sentences will be served concurrently. Will Smith was 34 years old.
