Frank Gifford Passes Away at 84

Frank Gifford, an NFL Hall of Famer and the play by play voice for ABC's Monday Night Football, passed away suddenly Sunday at his Connecticut home.  He was 84 years old.  Cause of death was listed as natural causes.  The news was first reported by NBC Sports.

Gifford helped lead the New York Giants to five NFL title games in the 50's and 60's, then joined ABC for the Monday night telecasts.  He announced 588 consecutive games for ABC.

Later in life he stayed in the spotlight thanks to his marriage to Kathie Lee Gifford, who co-starred on the TV talk show "Regis and Kathie Lee" and currently works for NBC on the "Today" show.

He also announced several Olympics.

Gifford went to USC and was chosen in the 1952 NFL Draft.  He was the league MVP in 1956 and ended his career in 1964.  He was used as a running back, defensive back, wide receiver and on special teams. He then worked for CBS before joining Monday Night Football.  His jersey number 16 was retired by the Giants.
