CARENCRO, La. (KPEL) -- A Carencro woman who lost her unborn child shortly after a hit-and-run accident is asking for the generosity of the public to help pay for her baby's funeral expenses.

Chasity Benoit, who was six months pregnant, was hit by Luis Ortiz, who police said fled the scene shortly after the crash. He was apprehended later and charged with hit-and-run, but he could face additional charges in connection with the death of Benoit's child.

At the hospital, Benoit told KATC-TV 3 that during an ultrasound, "the heartbeat kept dropping. It was 80 and it kept dropping. Next thing I know, the nurses and doctors are running all over, and I'm in surgery, and that's it."

"It all happened so fast," Benoit said.

Benoit said the boy would have been named Cullen.

A fund has since been created at www.gofundme.com to help the family pay for the Cullen's funeral.

"All money raised will go to Chasity and her daughter Caelyn to give Cullen a proper burial and help Chasity get back on her feet after this tragedy," read a statement on the Go Fund Me website.
