D'Angelo and the Vanguard's triumphant Black Messiah earned the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards and "Really Love" earned Best R&B Song honors.

Black Messiah won raves with the album was released at the end of 2014 and the accolades for the mercurial singer-songwriter haven't stopped coming. His big Grammy night is a culmination for what has been a stellar return for the musician who hadn't released a studio album since 2000s also-acclaimed Voodoo. This particular album also touched on themes such as racism and black struggle; especially timely given the tenor of the times.

It was expected that Black Messiah would take home the award, but D'Angelo faced stiff competition, in particular from Jazmine Sullivan and Leon Bridges, who were both up for the award for their also-stellar albums Reality Show and Coming Home.
