UPDATE (10/31): Hilary Duff has apologized for the pilgrim/Native American costume she and boyfriend Jason Walsh sported while celebrating Halloween. In a refreshingly honest tweet, Duff didn't make any excuses or peddle blame for her ensemble, she explicitly owned up to her mistake.

Walsh apologized on Instagram as well, saying "I have only admiration for the indigenous people of America."

ORIGINAL POST (10/30): Hilary Duff and new boyfriend Jason Walsh caused a stir on social media over Halloween weekend when photos surfaced of the couple donning what many consider to be culturally insensitive costumes.

Duff and Walsh made their public debut as a couple at the famed annual Casamigos Tequila Halloween Party Friday night dressed as a pilgrim and a Native American chief. Fans took to social media to call out the former Disney star for what they consider to be cultural appropriation and promoting negative stereotypes.

The controversy comes at a sensitive moment in Native American relations, as many have joined the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota over the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Divergent star Shailene Woodley made headlines earlier this month after she was arrested for protesting the construction of the crude-oil pipeline through the tribe's ancestral lands. Other celebrities, including Avengers star Mark Ruffalo, have also spoken out against the construction of the pipeline.

Last month, Duff confirmed that she and personal trainer Walsh were dating in an Instagram post. The announcement came months after Duff finalized her divorce with NHL star Mike Comrie.
