Household Chemical Day Is Saturday

For the residents of the city of Lafayette and the unincorporated areas of the Lafayette Parish, tomorrow is the day when you can get rid of household chemical clogging up your shelves.

Why should you properly get rid of household chemicals?  Lafayette City Parish Environmental Manager Mark Pope says there are many great reasons:

• Chemicals can pose a threat to health
• Chemicals can contaminate the land, air and water
• Chemical disposed of improperly can cause injury to garbage collectors
• Improper chemical disposal is costly to taxpayers

Pope says the Household Chemical Day will again be held at the Cajun Field parking lot.

The collection hours are from 8 a.m. until noon tomorrow, Saturday June 13.

You are asked to drive into Cajun Field using the Gate 4 entrance which is off of West Congress Street.

The Household Chemical Day is for city of Lafayette residents and residents of the unincorporated parts of Lafayette Parish only. Identification, like a driver's license will need to be presented.

The following is a list of the items that CAN be dropped off tomorrow:

• Paint and paint products
• Turpentine
• Paint thinner and stripper
• Stains
• Gasoline
• Chemical cleaners
• Photographic chemicals
• Pesticides
• Herbicides
• Pool Chemicals
• Mercury Thermometers

Pope reminds everyone that when bringing in your liquids, all items need to be secure and no leaking.

The following is a list of items that CAN'T be dropped off:

• Electronics including tv's and monitors
• Ink & toner cartridges
• Rechargeable batteries
• Automotive batteries
• Motor oil & antifreeze
• Compressed gas cylinders
• Tires
• Florescent bulbs
• Appliances
• Fire & smoke detectors
• Commercial waste ( any chemicals from businesses)
• Medical waste
• Medicine
• Explosives including ammunition
• Radioactive Material
• PCB oil
