How many of the Acadiana area schools will be victorious in the opening round of the LHSAA football playoffs this week?

27 schools from the area will be vying for state titles, in nine different classifications, with 25 in action this week.

Let's run down the different classes, and see what teams from the local area have the best chances at advancing to the second round:

In Class 5A, Acadiana, the #14-seed will host 19th-seeded Alexandria, while 30th-seeded Comeaux will be on the road to take on #3-seed Ponchatoula.

Acadiana is not your typical #14-seed. They really have only two losses all year, but had to forfeit a game to Sulphur. As for their other losses; one was on the last play of the game to Carencro, and the other was a one-point loss to Ponchatoula. You have to like the Wreckin' Rams' chances in this one.

As for Comeaux, they come in riding a three-game losing streak, and have to travel to face the #3-seed. Are they the underdogs? Yes. And rightfully so. But if they can get back to playing the way were prior to the losing streak, and when they suffered only a 4-point loss to Acadiana, and a 1-point loss to Sulphur, they have a shot.

The pick here is that Acadiana advances.

In Class 4A, 7th-seeded Rayne is home to take on 26th-seeded Northshore, with 9th-seeded Carencro hosting 24th-seeded Salmen, while 22nd-seeded Breaux Bridge travels to 11th-seeded Plaquemine, 25th-seeded St. Martinville travels to 8th-seeded Loranger, and 27th-seeded Cecilia is on the road to face 6th-seeded Woodlawn-Shreveport.

Rayne and Carencro are both favorites, and have really a really good chance at advancing, but don't count out on at least one upset involving the road team.

Breaux Bridge has played a tough schedule, and is facing a Plaquemine squad, that while very good, has only beaten one team with a winning record all year. They play in a district (6-4A) that has only two teams with winning records, and was only 1-3 in non-district play. It will be tough, as they're on the road, but the Tigers can easily pull an upset.

St. Martinville probably has a tougher task, heading to Loranger, but they, like Breaux Bridge, played a really tough schedule, and will be taking on a team that has three wins against team from lower classifications. Don't be shocked if the Tigers pulled it off.

Cecilia has a shot as well. The Bulldogs began the year at 1-3, before winning five-straight, prior to losing to St. Martinville, after an emotional win over Breaux Bridge. Yes, they are the underdogs, and Woodlawn-Shreveport is 9-1. But four of Woodlawn's wins were by 8 points or less, and they only played three teams all season with winning records.

Look for Rayne and Carencro to advance, and for one of the St. Martin Parish schools to pull the upset.

In Class 3A, 3rd-seeded Kaplan hosts 30th-seeded Eleanor-McMain, while 8th-seeded Northwest hosts 25th-seeded Mansfield, 16th-seeded Eunice hosts 17th-seeded Erath, and 27th-seeded Church Point travels to tangle with 6th-seeded Jennings.

Kaplan and Northwest are big favorites, but unfortunately, somebody has to lose in the Eunice/Erath game.

As for Church Point, well, they're definitely the underdogs, facing a 9-1 Jennings team, but they played them earlier this year, and only lost by 6 points.

Three teams should advance in Class 3A.

In Class 2A, #7 Loreauville hosts #26 Bunkie, while 28th-seeded Jeanerette is on the road to take on 5th-seeded Kinder, and 31st-seeded Delcambre travels to 2nd-seeded Madison Prep.

Loreauville has a great chance to advance, but unfortunately for Jeanerette and Delcambre, they have less than enviable draws.

Expect Loreauville to be the only team to advance in the Class 2A bracket.

In Class 1A, there are no teams from the immediate Acadiana area, so this bracket is an easy one to call.

In Division I, on the select side, there are no teams from the Acadiana area, so this is an easy one to call.

In Division II, this one is easy as well, as St. Thomas More and Teurlings Catholic both draw opening week byes.

In Division III, 2nd-seeded Notre Dame hosts 15th-seeded Northlake Christian and 4th-seeded Catholic High (New Iberia) hosts 13th-seeded Episcopal, while 11th-seeded Opelousas Catholic is on the road to face 6th-seeded Calvary Baptist and 16th-seeded Sacred Heart (Ville Platte) travels to top-seeded Riverside Academy.

Notre Dame and Catholic High should advance, while Sacred Heart has their work cut out for them.

The intriguing match-up in this bracket is Opelousas Catholic going up against Calvary Baptist. OC only lost three games, and to good teams (Notre Dame, Catholic High, and Loreauville), so they won't be intimidated by Calvary. They will need a break or two to win, but they have more than a fighting chance.

Still, expect only two teams to advance from the Division III bracket.

Finally, in Division IV, top-seeded Ascension Episcopal will host 16th-seeded Highland Baptist, 4th-seeded Westminster plays host to 13th-seeded False River, and 5th-seeded Lafayette Christian hosts 12th-seeded Central Catholic (Morgan City), while 10th-seeded Vermilion Catholic is on the road to face 7th-seeded Cedar Creek and #11th-seeded St. Edmund travels to 6th-seeded Ascension Catholic.

The home teams should survive, but you can maybe expect for at least one of the two road teams to pull the upset. Vermilion Catholic is a proud program, facing a team  that doesn't have a win against a single team with a winning record, while St. Edmund, who has been impressive on some occasions, even if inconsistent, will be facing an Ascension Catholic team riding a two-game losing streak.

Look for four teams to advance from Division IV.

So, the pick is that 14 teams from the Acadiana area will win this week, and advance to the second round, joining St. Thomas More and Teurlings, who draw opening round byes.

As always, we wish the very best to all the local schools!
