The Ole Miss Rebels are looking for a new head football coach, less than seven weeks before the start of the 2017 college football season.

In a surprising development, Hugh Freeze resigned from his position as head coach of the Rebels on Thursday evening, just a week after SEC Media Days.

Ole Miss also announced that co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Matt Luke will take over as the interim head coach.

The 47-year old Freeze, a native of Oxford, Mississippi, was head-coach at Ole Miss for five years, guiding the Rebels to an overall record of 39-25, including a 2-1 record in bowl games, and a 5-7 record in 2016.

Prior to arriving at Ole Miss, Freeze was the head coach at Arkansas St., when the Red Wolves went 10-2 in 2010.

On February 22, 2017, Ole Miss announced it would self-impose a bowl ban for the upcoming season after the NCAA accused the program of numerous violations of organization rules, including a lack of institutional control, with Freeze charged with failure to monitor and not promoting an atmosphere of compliance.
