The 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins today. However, there have already been two named storms before the official designation of the season started. Both storms were minor in nature. Hurricane Alex and Tropical Storm Bonnie did minimal damage as far as tropical cyclones are concerned. Bonnie did cause some flooding the Carolinas and basically ruined the lucrative Memorial Day weekend along the coast.

What does the start of hurricane season really mean to you? It means now is the time to think ahead should your hurricane plans be forced into action.

You put together an emergency kit of essential supplies and medicine. Have at least three days worth of supplies in case you can’t get home right away or if your power is disrupted.

Those comments were made by Jim Waskom Director of the  Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. His remarks were chronicled in a story published by the Louisiana Radio Network.

Among the things you take a moment to consider now are what would you do with you pet should you have to evacuate? Do you have your important papers and documents in a safe and portable place? This is also the time to verify your hurricane kit. Do you have what you need in there?

The current outlook for hurricane season 2016 is for it to be about average. Most of the reliable tropical forecast centers are suggesting about 12 named storms between now and the end of November.

The odds are the coastline of Louisiana won't be affected by a direct hit from a land-falling tropical cyclone but it only takes one storm to make a season memorable. Now is the time to rethink your plan and be ready to act should the need arise.
