Four former Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies are behind bars for their involvement in an excessive-force situation instigated against an inmate.

Thirty-three-year-old Michael McSheffrey and 28-year-old Brandon Gallien have been charged with second-degree battery and malfeasance in office for the April 8 beating of an inmate at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. The inmate was hospitalized for several days after the incident, according to Louisiana State Police.

Twenty-eight-year-old Adrian Theriot and 33-year-old Scarla Celestine landed themselves the same charges for watching the situation unfold without interfering or accurately reporting it to supervisors.

Louisiana State Police conducted the investigation.
