FENTON, La. (AP) — A Jefferson Davis Parish sheriff's deputy has rescued a woman who was pinned underneath an SUV in a muddy ditch.

Sheriff's Commander Chris Ivey tells local media that Deputy Brock Hymel responded to a crash on Louisiana 102 near Fenton around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Ivey says Hymel found a female passenger had been ejected and was lying face down in a ditch.

Ivey says the woman wasn't breathing and that her mouth and nose were blocked with mud. Ivey says she began breathing after Hymel dug the woman from the mud and pulled her from underneath the SUV.

The woman was taken by helicopter to a Lake Charles hospital and is in stable condition.

The driver was taken to a hospital by ground transport.

Louisiana State Police are investigating.
