John Mayer was a guest on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' and while he did address his breakup with Katy Perry, he didn't actually say much about it.

Ellen herself weighed in, got the confirmation that things are dunzo between the two and expressed her support and condolences, since the last time she saw the duo together was at the Grammys. She said, "I know Katy. She is a good friend, and I know that since then, you're not together anymore. And I just want to say, I love you and my thoughts are with you."

Mayer, known for spewing about his past relationships with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, simply said, "It was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship still."

Yes, a very private relationship between two incredibly public people. Mayer realizes that people are curious, and given his past predilection to open his big mouth, they expect him to talk. But he is remaining tight-lipped.

"I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other," the singer said. "I've been much happier since then."

All he really said was that "coupling is a tricky thing."

Mayer certainly didn't look comfortable discussing the relationship, as he gripped the armrest of his chair.

He also spoke about how his drinking exacerabated his vocal problems, pointing out that your body doesn't always shake things off as you get older and he loved a "delicious, wonderful poison" known as scotch. He had to decide that he liked singing and writing more than he liked delicious scotch and that he had to dial it down.

Tying the two together, there was that blind item suggesting that Mayer's drinking helped sink the relationship.
