Just Blaze Defends Baauer’s ‘Harlem Shake’
Baauer‘s dance hit ‘Harlem Shake’ has left a few critics not shaking to the song’s infectious groove.
Folks in Harlem, N.Y., as well as the dance troupe the Original Harlem Shakers, think the song discredits the real art form of the popular dance step. However, Just Blaze, who is good friends with Baauer, disagrees.
The hit-maker contends there was no malicious intent behind the song, which was created a year ago. “It’s no disrespect towards Harlem, but it’s like times change, things evolve. This is the entertainment industry,” Blaze explains on MTV2’s ‘The Week in Jams’ (quotes from VIBE). “So it’s not like the record was made to disrespect the original ‘Harlem Shake.’ It was a vocal sample from a record, chopped up, and made [into] the title of the song. It’s like people sometimes over think it. ”
He may have point.
Recently, Harlem native Jim Jones revealed that the song was in his possession before it became a viral hit. “Actually, that record was mine for a year. It was supposed to be for Pauly D’s album and we never did nothing with it,” he said. “When I started to hear the ‘Harlem Shake’ and heard the beat, I was like damn, I had the record for a year.”
So, if Jim Jones was cool with the song, then there’s no need to get upset over it, right?
Even fellow Harlemite Diddy co-signed Baauer’s tune and he was the one that introduced America to the Harlem shake by way of G. Dep’s video ‘Let’s Get It.’
“It’s fun; it’s a fun version,” Diddy told MTV News. “Any time people are dancing, especially in this day and age when everybody’s trying to be so cool, and people are letting loose, letting off some steam, I agree with it.”
“I do want people to get educated on the real Harlem Shake,” he adds. It’s something that’s an art form, but anything that’s branding Harlem, my hometown, I’m all for it.”
What do you think? Is Baauer’s ‘Harlem Shake’ disrespecting the original dance art form? Or are people blowing it out of proportion? Tell us in the comments below.
