I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about the hype behind Justin Bieber's new 'Boyfriend' single. For starters, I thought it would leak (like every song/album does) days before the slated Monday morning midnight release, but it didn't. I also didn't think I would be as impressed as I was when I heard it for the first time, but I was.

Justin Bieber has officially made the leap from 'teeny bopper hearthrob,' to ... ummm, let's just call him a 'legal hearthrob.' After all, the kid just turned 18, but he is wasting no time when it comes to maturing, both in life (Google his girl, Selena Gomez) and through his music. For those who may be smirking and shaking their head in doubt to my previous comment, just think about Justin Timberlake, Usher and even a guy named Michael Jackson. Now I'm not even trying to come close to comparing talent levels or accomplishments (sorry Biebs, you still have a ways to go) but my point is, all 3 of the aforementioned found a way to successfully make the jump from teen sensation to adult pop idol.

It doesn't hurt to have a mentor (Usher) who has 'been there, and done that,' and Justin is definitely privileged to be surrounded by a great team to vibe off of, including singer/songwriter Mike Posner who is credited along with Bieber on the new 'Boyfriend' track.

Though Bieber's new sound is "more vocally assertive," he has an opportunity to broaden his audience with the new, more mature material, says Island Def Jam Music Group president and chief operating officer Steve Bartels.

You have to respect when an artist doesn't settle and continues to push the envelope with new material for their fans, and right now it's a good time to be a 'Belieber.' On the other hand, as I mentioned in a previous blog post, if you're a 'Bieber-hater,' it will definitely be a lonnnnng summer.

Justin's new single is available now on iTunes and just about everywhere else you can legally download music. Thumbs up to the kid on this one. But, as always, I gotta hear your thoughts. So comment below!
