Another Saturday. Another disappointing performance for the Ragin’ Cajuns against a BCS school.

Coming into the 2013 season, most Ragin’ Cajuns fans knew facing the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Kansas State Wildcats in the first two games would be difficult. But a 1-1 start, or even a 2-0 start seemed like a legitimate possibility. But after two 20+ point losses by the Cajuns, it’s now more about just getting into the win column than it is about looking good against the “big boys.”

After getting run out of Fayetteville by the Razorbacks last week 34-14, it didn’t look much better this Saturday against the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kansas. Early on, the Cajuns held tough against the Wildcats, answering an early field goal with one of their own to tie the score at 3 with 6:33 left in the 1st Quarter. But that was as close as the Cajuns would get.

After rushing touchdowns by RB John Hubert in and backup QB Daniel Sams of Slidell, along with a Jack Cantele 27-yard field goal, it was the Cajuns who found themselves down 20-3 at the half, with not much rhythm being found on offense and a defense that looked like it was reeling.

And it got worse before it got a little bit better for the Cajuns, as WR/KR Tramaine Thompson took the 2nd half kickoff 94 yards for a Kansas State touchdown, making the score 27-3 Wildcats. After starting QB Jake Waters ran in a 1-yard touchdown for Kansas State to run the score up to 34-3, the Cajuns finally started showing some life again as WR/KR Daryl Surgent returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, making the score 34-10 in favor of the Wildcats.

Just under two minutes later, after a Kansas State turnover, QB Terrance Broadway ran it in from 4 yards out as the Cajuns cut the Wildcat lead to 34-17. But just like that, the Cajun momentum was snuffed out…for a little while.

Kansas State’s DB Ty Zimmerman intercepted a Broadway pass, running it in from 32 yards out, giving the Wildcats a 41-17 lead with 7:09 left in the 3rd Quarter. But, in what turned out to be one of the few positives in their performance Saturday, the Cajuns didn’t give up and kept fighting.

Broadway took the Cajuns on a 12 play, 80-yard drive that ended with a touchdown catch by WR Jamal Robinson, cutting the Wildcats lead to 41-24. The Cajuns then found themselves near the Wildcat 5, but after a false start penalty out of a timeout on 3rd down, could not convert the drive into 7 points, instead settling for a field goal and cutting the deficit to 41-27.

But that would be it for Louisiana, as Kansas State scored on a 2-yard run by Hubert to make the final score 48-27, leaving the Cajuns winless on the young season.

On the day, the Wildcats racked up 454 yards of total offense (305 passing, 149 rushing) while the Cajuns finished with 370 yards of total offense (193 passing, 177 rushing).

For Kansas State, Waters completed 22 of 31 passes for 278 yards and 2 interceptions. On the ground, Sams ran for 63 yards and 1 TD on 8 carries while Hubert rushed for 56 yards and 2 TDs on 18 carries. On the receiving end, WR Tyler Lockett had game-highs in both receptions and receiving yards, ending with 8 catches for 111 yards.

For Louisiana, Broadway completed 18 of 30 passes for 193 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. On the ground, RB Alonzo Harris gained 74 yards on 13 carries, while Broadway and RB Torrey Pierce each finished with 42 yards rushing. On the receiving end, Robinson led all Cajun receivers with 6 catches for 83 yards and 1 TD.

Up next for the Cajuns (0-2) is Nicholls State at Cajun Field. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. You can listen to broadcast on Sportradio ESPN 1420, with the pregame show beginning two hours before kickoff.
