After being arrested on the exact same day he was set to get out of jail in March, Kevin Gates has been sentenced to 30 months for a gun charge in Cook County, Illinois.

TMZ reports the Baton Rouge superstar pled guilty to charges of felony gun possession in court Wednesday (April 26). The warrant for his arrest was originally issued because he failed to show up for his court date back in 2013. He's scheduled to be transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

In a statement to TMZ, Gates' lawyer Herschel Rush said the charges carried a maxium of 10 years in prison, so the team is "very pleased with the result of 30 months."

Gates had an extraordinary 2016, releasing his official debut album Islah, which went platinum (with no features) later that year. He also released his solid Murder for Hire 2 EP.

XXL has reached out to Atlantic Records for comment.
