Lafayette Consolidated Government cut the ribbon yesterday at the first safe exchange location in the parish.

The parking spot, which is located at the Lafayette Police Department, was created as a secure meeting place for citizens to exchange items that were purchased online. The designated spot can also be an exchange location for parents involved in custody disputes.

According to KATC, the spot is monitored by cameras and it can oversee exchanges on site, plus it can record license plate numbers on vehicles.

Lafayette isn't the first city to designate a spot for such exchanges, but more may soon show up throughout the city.

We salute our friend, Councilwoman Liz Webb Hebert, for spearheading this project and we also applaud the Lafayette Police Department for reserving this spot for transactions.

The citizens of Lafayette now have a place to go when they make transactions with strangers or with people they may not feel comfortable around.
