Saturday’s crash involving the bus that was carrying the Lafayette High School baseball team and an SUV was horrific. The head on crash killed four people, including three minors, all of whom were in the SUV and not wearing their seat belts. And, Head Coach Sam Taulli says, it could’ve been a whole lot worse.

"She said, ‘Coach, I just basically hung on,’” says Coach Taulli. “And she hung on the right way because if that bus would’ve flipped we would’ve had much more serious physical injuries, for sure. We would have had a lot more broken bones."Coach Taulli credits their bus driver, Amy Dore, for some amazing defensive driving, in keeping the situation from being much worse for the team. “She said, ‘Coach, I just basically hung on,’” says Coach Taulli. “And she hung on the right way because if that bus would’ve flipped we would’ve had much more serious physical injuries, for sure. We would have had a lot more broken bones.”

Coach Taulli says one of the players sustained two crack vertebra. “He should be fully recovered, hopefully by the end of the school year,” says Coach Taulli. He says about 10 of his players and a coach suffered concussions and 6 or 7 children suffered broken noses and “some stitched up lips.”

Coach Taulli says they were all counseled Sunday and talked through the catastrophic events. “The entire team and coaches’ hearts and prayers go out to those poor families that were in that vehicle,” says Coach Taulli. “And it’s going to be a long time before I think all of us heal and forget about what has happened.”"The entire team and coaches’ hearts and prayers go out to those poor families that were in that vehicle,” says Coach Taulli. “And it’s going to be a long time before I think all of us heal and forget about what has happened."
