When talking about public opinion of the Hub City's red light camera program LCG Council Chairmen Jay Castille summed up what he's hearing by saying:

The ones who are getting the tickets don't like it. The ones who are watching the people speed through red lights and right-hand turns, they like it.

Another group that may like the program are those managing the Consolidated Government's bank statements. The contract, due to expire in June, allows the municipality to recover 60 percent of all revenue brought in by the Redflex traffic monitoring system.

The city-parish budget for the current year lists the Safe Light-Safe Speed violations are bringing in around $1.6 million to the LCG coffers this fiscal year.

The LCG Council will consider giving Mayor-President Joel Robideaux the authority to give the company a one-year extension to the current agreement.

Regardless of what side of the argument people are on, Castille said he hopes to see a packed house for the LCG meeting. If you want to give your opinion on the matter, you can attend the meeting to be held at City Hall next Tuesday (May 17) at 5:30 p.m.
