Next Friday, the Lafayette Transit System will celebrate Transit Week, National Transportation and Bike Month along with National Public Works Week by having a day of free bus service.

Lafayette City Parish President Joey Durel declared May 11 through 15 as Transit Week, and he is hoping people will "join in a nationwide effort to promote public transit's benefits, honor transit employees, and encourage new riders."

Consolidated Government officials say Transit Week partners well with the Transit's new work with Google Maps. The new program gives local bus information for riders like schedules, routes and where buses make their stops. So now when a resident looks for directions on Google, they also get a bus route.

Officials say that they are also honoring public work employees next Friday, May 22 during National Public Works Week.

Cyclists will also benefit on the "No Pay Bus Day" as there is space on the front of every public transit bus for bicycles, so they can get a free ride to wherever they will be biking.
