On the verge of his forthcoming new mixtape Heartbreak SoldierLil Xan released a performance video today (June 22) for his Total Xanarchy track, "Wake Up."

The year's first installment in Vevo's LIFT Performance series, the video features the Redlands, Calif. rapper waking up and singing the song in a lime green-lit psychiatric ward cell. Over the course of the clip, the lights turn dark, then blood red, finally flickering off as Xan sits down and rests his head in his hands.

"Ayy, I wake up, I throw up, I feel like I'm dead/Ayy, I wake up, I throw up, I feel like I'm dead/Ayy, I wake up, I throw up, I feel like I'm dead/Ayy, I wake up, I throw up, I feel like I'm dead," goes the vocal fried hook.

It's a stark pivot from the song's original Cole Bennett-directed video, whose images of colorful birthday cake and Crunch Berries skewed more playful. The mood shift may have to do with Xan's ongoing struggles with anxiety. The "Betrayed" rapper shared footage in May of a self-described breakdown, during which he keyed his own Mercedes Benz. A few weeks later, he told TMZ that he was feeling better, thankfully.

Xan released Total Xanarchy in April. You can watch his alternate video for "Wake Up" below.
