Gary L. Stewart was born in New Orleans and was later abandoned in a stairwell of a Baton Rouge apartment building. When his birth mother contacted him years later, it sent Stewart on a journey to find his biological father. A journey that would eventually lead Stewart to pen the book "The Most Dangerous Animal of All: Searching for My Father ... and Finding the Zodiac Killer".

In the book, Stewart claims his biological father, Earl Van Best Jr., was the notorious Zodiac serial killer, believed to have killed five people in northern California between 1968-69. The Zodiac killer famously sent letters and cryptograms to California newspapers.

When reached for comment, the San Francisco police say they have not heard of the book or its claims, but are willing to investigate all leads for the case which is still open.

"It's an open and active case, so we don't comment," San Francisco police spokesman Albie Esparza told CNN. "But (it's) certainly something our homicide investigators will take a look at."

To date, many people have claimed to know the identity of the Zodiac killer, but none have been definitively proven.

Stewart is married with a child and is the vice-president of a cleaning company in Baton Rouge. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University.
