Officials have released Joseph Robert Paterson, the man accused of killing the 2-year-old son of Adrian Peterson, from the Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Patterson is the live-in boyfriend of the mother of the child, Ann Dohen, and was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Patterson called authorities when the child was unresponsive and he claimed that the child had choked. However, it was later determined that the child actually died due to trauma to the head.

Patterson was released from jail even though he had previous charges involving domestic disputes on his record, and his attorney says that he, Patterson, will remain in the area and defend himself in court. Charges may be upgraded to murder now that the young boy has passed.

Patterson's father says that his son is innocent and that the public should not jump to a judgement in this case. Patterson's father also confirmed that his son has received death threats since the passing of the 2-year-old boy.

Adrian Peterson had only recently learned that the the child was indeed his son, and did not have a relationship with him. For more on this story, click here.
