Marcus Smart Pushes Fan, Suspended 3 Games [Video]

UPDATE: All-American Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart has been suspended 3 games for his conduct at the end of Saturday night’s game versus Texas Tech.

Smart pushed a Texas Tech fan in the front row in the final moments of last night’s game between the two schools.

According to various reports, Orr has a history of fan misconduct, as it pertains to his words towards opposing players. While he’s apparently crossed the line many times in the past, an original report claimed that Orr called Smart a racial slur.

Orr did not use a racial slur, admitting that he crossed a line when he called Smart a “piece of crap”. Texas Tech conducted their own investigation into the incident, and found Orr’s report to be true, this according to an espn.com report.

Smart met with the media earlier today, saying the following:

I want to apologize to the fan, whose name is Jeff Orr. I want to apologize to him. I want to apologize to my teammates, to my coaching staff, Coach Ford, my family, Oklahoma State University. This is not how I (conduct) myself, this is not how this program is ran. This is not how I was raised. I let my emotions get the best of me.

“Just can’t let that happened again. This is a lesson I’ll have to learn from. The consequences that are coming with it, I’m taking full responsibility. No finger pointing. This is all upon me.

“I just want to really apologize to those that are very important to me. I feel like I let my teammates down. These guys mean a lot to me. Not to be able to be out there with them, it hits me in my heart. I have a lot of people that look up to me, a lot of little kids, so once again, I truly apologize. This is not me. I really do apologize for it. Like I said, I take full responsibility and the consequences that come with it.”

I’m not condoning contacting a fan. Smart should not have shoved Orr. However, a serious issue must be dealt with. The lawlessness in which fans can interact with college players needs to be addressed.

I wish fans in the sports world behaved as if they knew there could be serious repercussions for saying awful things. Right now, many feel invincible, as if they have the right to say whatever they want because they purchased a ticket and support their team.

What’s the bigger story here? Is it Smart’s shove? Or the fan’s alleged behavior?
