Mark Ingram is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards, a feat that, if accomplished, would make him only the 7th player in New Orleans Saints’ history to do so.

With the final game of the Saints' 2016 schedule coming up on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Ingram has rushed for 940 yards, while averaging an impressive 5.1 yards-per-carry, the highest figure of his career.

The 26-year old Ingram, who the Saints drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Alabama, is averaging 62.6 yards-per-game. If he hits his average on Sunday, Ingram would finish with 1,002 yards.

A native of Hackensack, New Jersey, Ingram has had two particularly outstanding games this season, to put him in a position to reach 1,000 rushing yards, rushing for 158 yards against the San Francisco 49ers on November 6, prior to rushing for 146 yards against the Los Angeles Rams back on November 27.

Ingram’s single-season best, in terms of rushing yards, was the 964 yards he rushed for back in 2014, the 12th-best single-season rushing figure in team history.

To date, only six other players have ever rushed for 1,000 yards in a season season for the Saints, with the last coming in 2006, when Deuce McAllister rushed for 1,057.

McAllister, the all-time leading rusher in franchise history, rushed for 1,000 yards, or more, in a season 4 times (2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006).

George Rogers, who set the franchise single-season rushing record back in 1983, with 1,674 yards, eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards twice with the Saints (1981 & 1983), while Ricky Williams also did it twice (2000-2001).

Those are the only running back to rush for over 1,000 yards as a member of the Saints multiple times.

The other three to do it, Chuck Muncie (1979), Rueben Mayes (1986), and Dalton Hilliard (1989) each did it once.
