I am always on the lookout for new things to teach my kids and one thing I want them to know about is the history of the city we live in. Lafayette has been named the happiest city in the nation on multiple occasions, but what about our namesake, the Marquis de Lafayette? One YouTube video that keeps coming up is this one from Liberty's Kids. The episode about the Marquis de Lafayette is one that stood out to me. Some comments on the YouTube video say the facts are fuzzy at times, but the story is interesting. From Wikipedia:

Liberty's Kids is an animatedhistorical fictiontelevision series produced by DIC Entertainment, originally broadcast on PBSon their PBS Kids block from September 2, 2002 to April 4, 2003, although some PBS stations continued to air reruns until August 2006.

The video has to be several years old, but for some reason people are watching this particular episode from all over the world. This isn't the first time Lafayette has had a starring role. He is portrayed prominently in the hit Broadway play 'Hamilton'. There is a lot of discussion about the history of Lafayette and our area of Louisiana. It is nonetheless something cool to watch.

Back in 2013, then-mayor president Joey Durel explained the importance of a quilt with ties to the Marquis de Lafayette that made its permanent move to Lafayette. He told KPEL that though the quilt was moved to Lafayette's city hall, this is not the first time Lafayette residents have had the chance to see the well-traveled quilt.

This was actually seen in Lafayette earlier during the 250th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette's birthday in 2007.

The quilt was made by the Quilters’ Guild Acadienne here in Lafayette. The quilt has traveled around the world; it's been to France, it's been to Washington D.C., and now it's back here. They donated it to be hung in city hall. It's in a big beautiful frame, and it really brightens up that big atrium.
