On Monday (April 16), Meek Mill moved one step closer to being released from prison after the Philadelphia District Attorney recommended the rapper be given a new hearing. While Meek was denied release yesterday, he did get a chance to speak with CNN's Don Lemon about the upcoming trial and why people should vote for politicians who support justice reform.

"The most important thing I want to say is vote. When it's time to vote for governor, when it's time to vote for judges, D.A.s, vote," the rapper said. "Let's vote for people that's into justice reform and helping the urban community. 'Cause, you know, we're being affected by it but we're not voting."

While Meek is currently serving a two-to-four-year sentence, the rapper maintains a positive spirit and believes he will eventually be free. "I don't really try to get my hopes up from that court room right there," Meek said. "I feel like I will be free one day... I think I'll be able to get my chance pretty soon. My time coming."

The Wins & Losses rapper's latest comments echo what he said during a recent interview with NBC Nightly News. Speaking with Lester Holt, Meek believes he now has to help minorities who have come from similar situations like himself. "I think God put me in this position to be able to do a show with Lester Holt and open up eyes for other young Black men," he said.

On April 16, the District Attorney's Office said in court that due to questions of credibility about the officer who arrested Meek, the rapper's conviction on gun and drug charges should be vacated. The admission, made by Assistant District Attorney Liam Riley, marked the first time prosecutors agreed with the artist's legal team about his questionable arrest.

Although Meek wasn't released on Monday, Judge Genece Brinkley did agree to give the rapper another hearing, which has been scheduled for June.
