Earlier this year, Miley Cyrus announced her intentions to more or less distance herself from hip-hop. On Monday night (Oct. 1), though, the singer once again revisited the genre when she freestyled an impromptu pop version of Cardi B's platinum-selling hit single"Bodak Yellow" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Singing over some light live xylophones, Miley turned in a pretty seamless pop version of the ubiquitous rap song, making it sound as if she'd actually practiced it beforehand. She even managed to edit out most of the curse words on the fly. All together, pretty solid job from Miley, whose newest album, Younger Now, dropped last Friday (Sept. 29).

Miley's been something of a controversial figure in the world of hip-hop ever since her somewhat infamous showing at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and then, of course, her collab with Mike WiLL Made-It. Things got even worse for her when she said she wanted to distance herself from rap music she felt disrespected women.

After facing a wave of backlash, Miley responded to claims of cultural appropriation and her apparent ditching of hip-hop culture. "So, to be clear I respect ALL artists who speak their truth and appreciate ALL genres of music (country , pop , alternative," she explained. "But in this particular interview I was asked about rap) I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip hop as I’ve collaborated with some of the very best! At this point in my life I am expanding personally/musically and gravitating more towards uplifting, conscious rap!

Check out Miley's pop rendition of Bardi's "Bodak Yellow" for yourself below. It begins at around the 4:05 mark.
