New Music Releases — August 2014
The former has been working on ‘Blacc Hollywood’ for quite some time, but it will finally be released on Aug. 19. ‘We Dem Boyz’ and ‘You and Your Friends‘ are obvious club singles, but the ‘We Dem Boyz’ remix suggests that Khalifa isn’t completely done with the more lush sounds that originally grabbed the attention of hip-hop fans. Will ‘Blacc Hollywood’ be an improvement over the critically maligned ‘O.N.I.F.C.’? We’ll have to wait and find out.
Here’s another question: Can DJ Mustard make an album of straight bangers? He’s bringing the heavy hitters for ‘10 Summers,’ including YG, 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. DJ Mustard will attempt to continue his reign on Aug. 12.
The third biggest release for August is Jhene Aiko‘s long-awaited debut album, ‘Souled Out.’ The project’s lead track, ‘To Love and Die,’ is a solid entry to Aiko’s catalog, but it hasn’t come close to achieving the same chart success of ‘The Worst.’ Will the hype increase as the Aug. 25 release date approaches?
A$AP Mob‘s ‘L.O.R.D.’ rounds out the slate of bigger releases. Originally an EP, ‘L.O.R.D.’ was delayed as A$AP Ferg continued raising his profile with a few solid guest verses. The other A$AP members will get their shine if ‘Hella Hoes’ is any indicator. ‘L.O.R.D’ is set to drop on Aug. 25.
Alt-R&B and Brooklyn will be repped in August, too. FKA Twigs, a buzzed about U.K. songstress, will release what’s expected to be an emotionally blunt and experimental debut album on Aug. 12. East Coast hip-hop duo the Underachievers follow up 2013 highlight ‘Indigoism’ and trap-based ‘The Lords of Flatbush’ with ‘Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium,’ which also drops on Aug. 12.
