Sources tell WDSU-TV that the arena right next door the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, the New Orleans Arena, will be renamed today to the "Smoothie King Center."

According to the New Orleans Pelicans Senior Vice Preside of Communications Greg Bensel, the deal is reportedly good for 10 years. Smoothie King is a Louisiana based company operating out of Covington, La.

Reports out indicate that it took the NBA nearly a year to approve the name change being that the league had to approve all supplements sold by Smoothie King. The arena originally opened in 1999, and is set to undergo a a $25 million facelift following the NBA season.

The arena is the home to the New Orleans Pelicans, and has hosted a number of other events like NCAA Basketball games, concerts, and professional wrestling events.

The official announcement of the name change is set for Thursday, February 6th at 11am. I assume we can expect to see a visible change to the arena, with signage, once the announcement is made.
